Verdict : Web.com used to be great, especially when they were Interland. I've hosted numerous sites with them with no problems over the past 10 years. THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THEM. The existing sites are fine. But the last few times I tried to set up a new account, it's been such a nightmare I've finally given up. The last time they assigned my site to someone else's IP address, so whenever you tried to go to my site for 4 days, you got another site. Tech Support said to contact Sales. Sales said Tech Support had to handle it. Back and forth several times, they finally reprovisioned the site to a new IP address and sent me a user name and password that wouldn't work!

On the other site I tried to set up, they took away their easy-to-install FormMail script and told me I had to find and install my own. Fine, I can do that. I just needed to know the paths to PERL and SendMail on their servers. Their tech support person told me to search the Internet for any support for CGI-Scripts. When I informed them I doubted I could find that particular piece fo information on Google since it was specific to their server configurations, they finally found the paths. The script, alas, failed to work for some unknown reason, as did the WebMail account for the domain since I hadn't registered the domain with them.

Oh, and this is precious. When you talk to Tech Support they end the call by reading this canned script telling you that you'll get a survey to rate them and asking if there's any reason why you might not give them a good review. I've answered, "yes, the fact that you've completely screwed up my hosting might cause me not to give you a good review" and lo and behold, I haven't gotten a survey from them. What a great way to screen out bad reviews!

When I called to cancel my hosting, the Billing Support person didn't seem very surprised.

Verdict : How can my experience with this company be so different from the unhappy folks who've written in? My IT guy suggested we put our company website on Interland/Web more than 10 years ago. My personal website, which gets a lot of traffic, is also on Interland/Web. I can't remember the last time the website went down or we couldn't get mail. There's nothing wrong with my memory, it's just that Interland/Web has been extremely reliable. The person who is unhappy about losing a website should have kept a backup on his own system. It's easy to do and guarantees that you control your own fate. As for tech support, I don't have questions often, but I like being able to phone and talk to someone. And I've always found them helpful. I was going to switch to another hosting company, but after reading all the negative reviews on this website, I think I'll pay a little more and stay with the company that has served me so well for so long.

Verdict : I have been a customer of Interland/Web for nearly five years hosting a few different sites. At one point I even did a commercial for them based on my early experience. But I have had repeated tech and billing failures and finally have moved my domains to other hosting sites.

The pros: easy site builder if you have no experience, reliability in terms of uptime was very good, good reporting options. I rarely experienced total system failures.

The cons: consistently poor and unreliable customer service, from billing to tech support to the executive offices. Service issues happen anywhere, but the true culture of a company shows in it's service recovery efforts. While the service reps were unfailingly friendly, they were ineffective. I never got the same answer from one rep to another on the same issue. I repeatedly had to elevate tech support and billing issues. I sent letters to Atlanta and spoke directly to executives more than once. Even then it took seven months to correct the issues! There is no upward empowerment along the service chain -- until/unless you contact an executive in Atlanta, you will not get an issue resolved. I ended up filing a consumer protection complaint against them with my state AG.

I'm a small business owner and I don't have time to spend hours resolving issues that should never have happened in the first place. I stuck with them because the pricing was okay and because I was too lazy to switch. But the frustration finally got to me and I pulled the plug. I'm now saving roughly $600/yr on my domains.

Verdict : So I have had a website with Web.com for over 5 years now. Sales and support were friendly and they helped me upload my site, and I was gratified to see it working. But I found the hosting service to be arcane and instruction, and after initially putting up the site, didn't do much with it. I tried periodically to check emails, and do other things like add a new user, but wasn't able to. Who knows why?
Every year or so as it gets close to renewal time, I try once again to do very basic things and am unable too. I get frustrated and forget about it. Finally I started to call the support line. They are friendly, and acknowledge that there is a problem with the site, but it is a server problem, and they will forward the problem to a "specialist team." I can expect a resolution in a few hours. Hours pass, days pass, weeks pass. Nothing happens, so I call back. Same schpiel. Days pass, weeks pass. I call back again. Oh "it's because you need to renew your site. Yeah, I say but my email has never worked for me, I can't download my files, I can't add a new user, and have never been able too. "No, it's just because you need to pay for another year." Ok, fine I tell him to sign me up for another year. They say that it will take a few days for me to be able to access my site. Days pass, weeks, pass, I still can't do anything on my site. I call back. Another ticket, they say that they write that they have no problem on their end. They have created a new email account and been able to access it, but when I try I still can't. When I call support again, they can't seem to be able to access it either. Or add a new user. Or do anything. "Oh, we need to send this to a specialist team". More time passes. No further response. I call them back because now I am determined to figure out why they are dragging me along, when they have not done a thing to give me even the most basic access to my site. this time it's "because my domain name is expired. Yeah, but what about ALL THOSE YEARS that nothing has worked, and I have been paying for your services and my domain name. "No we assure you that nothing is wrong with the site, it's only not working because you need to reregister your domain name....we promise”. Fine, renew my domain name for another 5 years. "It will take a few days for the site to be back up." Time passes. Still can't do anything.
I am sure you think, what a moron, why doesn't he just switch services. I really just wanted basic functionality so I could retrieve my files and move to another hosting service. But not being able to, I keep having to renew and drag this out so I can get my files back. In my latest call, they say I need "to upgrade my plan." even though I pay 7.95 a month .....for nothing. So far I have already payed upwards of $500.00 to this company for nothing. Now they have the audacity to tell me that if I actually want "the specialist teams" to actually respond to my tickets, I need to "upgrade????" You have got to be kidding me. YOU ARE SCAMMING ME! HOW MANY OTHERS ARE YOU SCAMMING? You have been warned. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY AS YOUR WEB HOSTING SERVICE. As of yet, I still don't have basic ftp access. "something is wrong with your browser." Theirs too apparently as they can't access my site or anyone’s site since they are using Iexplore 6. WTF? How can you call yourself a internet hosting support staff when you can't access their pages on your browser? How hard is it for an internet company to download the lastest Iexplore??
I am going to try Godaddy and see if they can retrieve my files for me. First company to be able to get them gets my business. I don't have faith though. I think that I have been scammed, or am the .01 percent that has had 5 years downtime. Unbelievable. As of yet I have only had 1 of my many tickets responded too, saying that everything seems to be working. Too bad none of even your support staff agree. At least I thank you for bothering to respond that once when I didn’t pay your upgrade fee.

Sincerely,
Sean

P.S. just tried to send off a copy of this email to their customer feedback page. “Internet explorer cannot find this page” Surprise surprise. I am sure “something is wrong with my browser…”

Verdict : The extremely negative reviews (four reviewers does not make a statistically valid sample in any context) here are ridiculous. One feels badly for these victims of God knows what, but there are certain basic laws of economics that apply. The greatest is, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I've been with Web.com, and its predecessor Interland, for many years. They are quite reasonably priced, in my opinion, especially as they provide what I want and no more. They do so reliably. My site has been down perhaps once in eight years, and that's a better average than my ISP in terms of downtime. And I am using both services (the hosting at Web and the ISP locally) to run a business. Which should indicate I can't afford to have an unreliable hosting service.

The basic services offered are primitive and inconvenient, or basic and unadorned, which is all I'm paying for. I'd never go to these people for distributed services, creative services, or the like. That's why there are independent Web designers, independent back end service providers, etc.

The staff at Web/Interland have always been forthright, responsive, knowledgeable (though some more than others; and where in the world is it any different?), and have always acted with alacrity in solving problems. Most of the problems have been mail related, and most of these because of the limited services provided, and in two instances my ignorance about the limits of those services.

For $300 a year, which is bupkis, I am getting as much and more than I bargained for. I am responsible for all Web design, architecture, and the uses of the technologies. I wouldn't expect such responsibility to be assumed by a hosting service at these service rates, and to expect differentely is completely out of touch with reality.

Verdict : Web.com is not as bad as some people claim it is. I think it depends on your experience with building websites and the like. So far I have enjoyed the site creation, though I would like more templates and tools to apply to the site, I have really made the best out of what I have at my disposal. I have not had any real problems with them. I think I will switch hosting in a year or so as my level of technical skill increases in respect to HTML, CSS and overall design. It has been a good experience. I pay under a hundred bucks a year and that doesn't seem too bad to me.
No downtime yet in months. Called customer support and they were nice enough, but the capabilities of the webdesigner program is limited, so what they can talk you through doing is limited also.

--If you don't have any experience and want to easily create a web page, this is a pretty decent place to be. It is easy and not too complicated. If you want a professional page with tons of flashy effects, go somewhere else. But I am fine with it for the time being.

Verdict : If I could get the ratings of web.com to go to 0 out of 5, it would still be too high. My experience has been a nightmare with them. My site had been down for over 36 hours. I was on hold with their tech support for over an hour. Been on the phone with them almost the entire time the site has been down. Hard to run a business that way. Their server crashed and my web site was "unrecoverable". Great! Where's the back-up I ask.. on the server that crashed, they replied. Of course! All I got was an I'm sorry. What's the cardinal rule of back-ups folks?? Don't store them in the same location as the original right?? They did offer to move my non-existant site to another dedicated server for a price increase. I asked if the crash was planned at that point. They are on the same par with interland who bought them out. Do a search for Interland sucks and you will see what I mean. Stay away!

Verdict : My site became hosted by web.com not by choice but by web.com's buyout of another company. Since the buyout, my site has been down a few times, once for OVER 24 HOURS!!! Support does not reply in a timely manner. Tickets are closed without the issue being resolved.

Verdict : Web.com is the biggest joke in hosting- I was with them for 2 or more years, and was double billed repeatedly, billed for things I did not order, and not notified that my domain was going to expire. Their support wait time has an average of 45 minutes, they are overpriced, and scam you all they can. My experience with them was a 0 out of 10, ok, maybe a 1 out of ten, I am still alive. Avoid web.com like the plague, If you use them it will only result in anger and the like.
