Verdict : SurfSpeedy has never been the most reliable host out there, but they used to have better customer service. Sure, they were always breaking things, but at least you could talk to a person and have it rectified. Now, they've apparently downgraded their customer service (removed their 24 hour chat and have the phone only accessible 12 hours a day... seemingly only during the week). I shouldn't have to wait more than 36 hours to wait for someone to contact me if my domain is DOWN. My first year or two with them was great... the last year has seen a lot of downtime, entire accounts worth of email deleted and lots of other fun. I was hoping it was growing pains, but I give up.

Verdict : I've been with SurfSpeedy for about three years now, and haven't had a ton of problems with them. Granted, I haven't used their customer support a lot, but the 10-ish times I did, it normally took them anywhere from a couple hours to a day to respond. They were decently helpful, but there was much to be desired. The sites I have hosted with them have occasional hiccups and have been known to be down for an hour at a time, completely randomly. A couple hours later, I would get the excuse that the server was rebooting. *shrug* I did contact sales a year after we started with them and asked if I could start up another account for a small website I was doing. I found a competition's price ($4.00 a month) and asked if they would match it. They did, and it's been a good deal for the money. So overall, I've had a decent experience with SurfSpeedy. I would be hesitant to host a professional site with them though.

Verdict : I noticed most of the positive threads were posted by people who have only been hosting with SS for a short time...just be patient, you'll find out soon enough why they get so many negative reviews.

A few reviews mentioned their phone quality. One post said it was because he was in overseas UK. This is not the reason. I talk to people worldwide all the time with no problem. SurfSpeedy uses a poor quality VoIP phone system. I have varified this with a support representative. There have been times when their main toll-free number has been down.

Personally, I am always skeptical when reviewing posts like these. There are far too many people in this world that love to complain about something when they don't know the full story or maybe they're simply just picky.

Everything negative I have read so far about SS, I can beleive. In the past 12 hours, my dedicated server has dropped 3 times. I host 20 simple websites on this server. I can't even ping it when it drops off. In the past, I've tried calling but the support is worthless. I get the same line - Submit a support ticket. Well, when all of my websites are down and people are calling and complaining to me, I want something done right away. The fastest response I've gotten to a support ticket is 1 hour. This response is a simple reply that my ticket has been escalated to Level 2 support. Then a couple hours later I'll get another rely that it's been escalated again. By the time it's all over, Steve has gotten it. He seems to be the only one that has a clue.

The overall attitude of their staff has not been a good experience either. It's not even tech related. I know tech terms and can communicate with them on a technical level...it's just their attitude about their job that's the problem.

Anyway, we've had enough and moving on to a more reputable company.

Verdict : After 2 long years and trying to ride with the punches, I left SurfSpeedy after they CANCELLED my account, translating into well over 500 hours of site reconstructions and re-dos - ALL UNBILLABLE.

Why couldn't they just restore from backup? The last backup was done over 4 months ago. Warning: If you are reselling/hosting with SurfSpeedy now, make backups or you'll be in the same situation.

Trust me, there are better companies out there offering premium Tech Support, Customer Service and uptime. Your search will payoff in the long run.

Verdict : This is a terrible company to work with.
don't ever try them, if you don't want to spend countless hourstrying to solve anything.
they will suspend your account without letting you know why or when.

their data center is good, but not worth it if you can't solve anything with support.

Verdict : I've seen most of people reviewing here say negitave things about Surf Speedy. Now, I don't know who they are or if their comments are false or true. All I can say is, each and every negitave point made is unfounded by myself.

They offer reasonable pricing, their support isn't the best in the world, but a day to respond simply has NEVER been the case for me. I've waited maybe 30 minutes in the worst case. Sure the first level support staff isn't totally clued up, but that's why they are first level. So they can clear the simple tickets like.. where do I find my website at?

Their staff have went beyond the call of duty for me on 3 MAJOR occassions. I'd say what they did would cost me about $200 if I was with any other host for them to fix the issues and pay for their time. Surf Speedy didn't charge me a penny.

Their phone support isn't great for me as I'm in the UK. Connection to the phone is poor, but that's hardly their fault.

Fast setup, reliable, few bits of downtime which if all added up over the past 3 months would maybe amount to about 3 or so hours, but their a hosting company, it comes with the territory! No host has 100% uptime all year round for life!

Only thing I can think of is that the negitave reviews are from people that caused a problem and Surf Speedy didn't accept responsibility and these guys didn't like that. (not saying that is the case, but it's a common thing to happen). Don't let their comments put you off, Don't let my comments convince you to buy.. simply talk to them about your needs, and decide yourself at the end.

Verdict : Beware of Surf Speedy! They appear to offer terrific storage/bandwidth at a great price. . . BUT. . .
I contacted their Pre-Sales Support Chat and told them exactly how large my site was, what the contents were and what my intentions were to host a website there. They have a very odd clause in their TOS referring to an image-to-storage-space ratio which I was not clear about. I talked to Kalen of their support chat who proceeded to tell me that yes, my site would fit under their TOS under their developer plan. No problem I proceeded to sign up. I requested that they move my site over -- while they were gracious enough to agree to this, when they saw that the site was 12GB, they asked what the contents of my site was. I again explained what the site is (note: rated G site, subscription-based site offering access to the content via the Menalto Gallery system -- no big deal, just lots of pictures!), they agreed to move my site over. . . then after day 3 of trying ot get them to move the site over, I was contacted by their support and they said they could not host my site, and sorry for any inconvenience! I do not have any clue what that clause in their TOS is meant to do but deter people from putting ANY content in the storage space you are paying for. In addition, when I went to CANCEL my account (day 3, mind you), I was forced to type "I AGREE" to their TOS! I wasn't about to agree to the same TOS that my site allegedly was not in compliance with, so I typed "I DO NOT AGREE." Unfortunately, they said they could not honor my request to cancel my account. . . so I went straight to PayPal, explained the situation, and surprisingly, the next day they refunded my money. Good riddance, Surf Speedy! Everyone, pass this place over, if it seems too good to be true. . . . don't trust their pre-sales chat!

Verdict : I've had a quite bad experience with Surf Speedy. First of all, don't get caught by their nice website, it's only a front.

1- I've had many problem with their billing system that sent me "to be billed" emails and "You have been billed" which started to get confusing after awhile. So I checked my accounts (I have 2 sites with them) and I was billed a couple times more then I was supposed to and I had to talk MANY times with their support team to get results. Each time they told me that it would be taken care of and then nohing happenned so I had to call again...

2- Their servers are OFTEN down, ranging from 5-20 minutes to a couple hours. This is very annoying for me since I'm testing the websites I'm building on their server and I have to stop each time it goes down but I have no clue how long I have to wait before resuming my work.

And by the way the reason I'm writing this review is because my 2 sites are actually down as well as their own site and I'm getting pretty tired of this...

BOTTOM LINE : DON'T buy anything from them! NOT RELIABLE!! Just a pretty front... Pay more to get REAL service.

RECOMMENDED : I currently have about 20 sites with http://geohost.ca/ and they have GREAT service, great price and they usually solve ANY of your problems within 1 hour to 1 day. I NEVER waited more than a day for any change or setup.

Verdict : While my experience with SurfSpeedy has been much better than that of the other reviewers here, there have been a few stumbling blocks along the way.

While the price and most of the customer service is great (cPanel is great for the professional and the newbie blogger), don't expect the 99 percent uptime guarantee to follow through. There are hiccups with uptime although they don't last more than a few minutes.

Customer service response time online is about a day, give or take, and phone help isn't stellar but it does the job. SurfSpeedy looks like an outfit that started up around the Las Vegas business development boom, so expect improvement as time goes on but don't depend on it.

Verdict : This company will usually give you good service ONLY during the 30 day trial. Watch out after that. We did lots of local paid magazine and television advertising and learned from customers that our account had been suspended! We paid again and a few days later the account was again suspended. Of course, the "missing man" who handles that department is not available at the moment and NOBODY else at SurfSpeedy knows anything. They "say" their billing dept is in another city. Takes DAYS to get tickets responded to.

Better to sign up at www.icdsoft.com where all tickets are answered within one hour. Move away from this SurfSpeedy and tell your friends to STAY AWAY from SurfSpeedy.

Verdict : I have been with this company for about 7 months. I cannot count how many times my site has been down. Many times while uploading via FTP it would seem my site would disappear. When this would happen I couldn't check my email, I couldn't log into the control panel, couldn't upload, and my site GONE.

The customer support is horrible, all I would get out of them "We're working on it, sorry for the inconvenience." My site was down for a week straight and their excuse was server failure. I haven't gotten a response to my ticket for support I submitted over a week ago. And usually by the time they respond my site is back up and they say "well I don't see a problem" yeah my problem was a couple days ago, dude.

So I am saying bye bye to them and moving on and searching for greener pastures.

To you people who left positive reviews, you haven't been with them long enough. I was happy with surf speedy for the first month, but after the 30 day money back guaruntee expired, the problems came FLOOOOOOOOODING in!!!!!!!! It has been a horrible experience ever since. I wasted my money and wasted my time, I should have gotten out a long time ago.

Verdict : My experiences and thus, my ratings for Surfspeedy's web hosting services are low. Extended downtime, problems with DNS, unresolved issues, and the impression that important concerns were put on the "back-burner".

I wound up moving 5 domains from SurfSpeedy.com, one after one, to other web hosting services, although I had already paid SurfSpeedy for each one for the entire year. It was prudent to cut my losses there, and reinvest in a more reliable service elsewhere.

Verdict : I've been with Surf Speedy for only a couple months, they have decent reponse times for suppport tickets (1 day), but I left them mainly because their "customer service" was pretty unintelligible. Polite, but most of them seemed really incompetent.

It usually took a few days until someone qualified from their staff, who knew what they were doing, to help resolve my problem. It was pretty dissappointing.

The problems didn't end there. Their servers were constantly down and up. It took them ages to get the problem fixed. I am now with a much much better host. When you find a good host, it makes hosts like surfspeedy look terrible.

If you are looking for a serious host, I wouldn't recommend Surf Speedy.

Verdict : I started with SurfSpeedy in August 2004. They were working out really great until recently. Their control panel is really good and they have alot of templates. My problem with them started recently. Their customer service was great at first, then recently it would take them days to respond. I had a big problem lately with them being down constantly. I could never log in to edit my site. I would email them, and they would constantly ask for my username and password and paypal transaction #. Each time I received a support email, it would be from another rep and they would each ask me for the same verifying info. They had me ripping out my hair. Then I decided to switch in January to another hoster. It took me over 1 month to get them to unlock my domain so I could transfer my DNS. Then they unlocked my domain, and never released it. And again, each person would make me give them all my verifying info and make me wait days to reply. I think they should assign one or 2 people to each domain holder and not have ten people working on each support ticket. This complicates things and noone ever knows what was going on last. I wish they would have been really reliable, I would have stayed with them, because believe me, it was hell trying to transfer out of them. They lock you in like AOL! LOL. I am now with Dot5 hosting and so far their customer service has been excellent and have stuck by me trying to get surfspeedy to transfer my domain.

Verdict : Have been with Surf Speedy for 7 months. The overall package is outstanding. Speed, 24/7 chat support, ticket support, and phone support, loaded cpanel with many statistical packages and scripts.

However, chat support is rarely useful - they usually tell you to open a ticket. Telephone support also tells you to open a ticket. When you open a ticket, it takes about a dozen back and forths to resolve a technical problem. I still have an unresolved ticket from December 28 and this is now February 6.

Support is not in the U. S., the chat support I contacted tonight was located in the Philippines. Phone support sounds like they are in India - so technical language understanding is a problem.

So what am I saying? The business model is right on target, but when things so wrong, as they will, the overseas staff isn't trained technically to deal with it. And, culturally, as Americans, we want things fixed right away, and Surf Speedy's Support usually asks for patience - they don't understand right away. (They are supposed to update the statistics at midnight, but it could be any time from midnight to noon or beyond!)

Support at Surf Speedy is very courteous, refreshingly honest about the situation, but just not up to snuff technically. When the system goes down, they are not able to pinpoint the problem quickly - they flounder. One day about a month ago it took System Administration nine hours to get the system up because they didn't know what brought it down.

When I asked for credit for the system being down, Surf Speedy quickly credited my next bill for one month.

If Surf Speedy would tighten system administration and tech support they would be terrific.

One last point: Low price isn't everything. If it means that I would have to pay more to get a taut system administration and tech support, so be it.

Verdict : ok let me tell you my story. I had been a reseller with Surfspeedy for approx 5 months and everything went good until just recently. My account was terminated I believe Monday Jan 24th. I contact surfspeedy via the ticket system and got this response

Hello,

In regards to my account being terminated due to spamming, I would like to
find out what site was actaully spamming, I was not notified about this
problem.. the email set in billing should have been mikesheridan5@msn.com
and I have not received no such emails. If I had been notified I would have
ceased the account responsible for email spamming.. IF you could provide
more details on this matter I would greatly appreciate this.

I do however need to recover lost files and database information if that is
possible let me know so I can set up my other account with a different host
as they are not pleased with being terminated. and are losing money being
down that I will be liable for.

Please provide me with this information in a timely manner.

Michael Sheridan

Or which account was the one spamming.. IF I had knew I would have terminated their account.

I dont see why you terminated my Reseller acount... simply letting me know which account was doing the spamming Would have been suffcient and I would have terminated them no problem.

But i really like to know who was spamming, what proof you have for the spamming, so I can go about this in the most professional way.. What is my current billing email address?

I am speaking with a support representitive, She stated that the dopmain that used for the email spamming which was www.cedarvalleyweb.com - I do not host this website, I did a whois on the domain and it came up with the following.

Domain Name: CEDARVALLEYWEB.COM
Registrar: KEY-SYSTEMS GMBH
Whois Server: whois.rrpproxy.net
Referral URL: http://www.key-systems.net
Name Server: NS1.IDOTZ.NET
Name Server: NS2.IDOTZ.NET
Name Server: NS3.IDOTZ.NET
Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 17-jan-2005
Creation Date: 22-dec-2003
Expiration Date: 22-dec-2004

Why did i get terminated for an account on which i did not host?

They did not answer any questions as to why my account was terminated. I then proceded to contact SurfSpeedy via Phone. I talked to a lady Baily which is there support contact. which i also think she is there billing contact (I never once was able to speak to a tech) About this situation. She had then told me that My account was terminated due to email spam. I then asked to which domain that was sending out the email spam. She had then told me the domain was cedarvalleyweb.com, Which i had that domain a while back but was never used. I can assure i do not tolerate email spamming at all.

She then said she tried to contact me via phone twice about this matter (in Nov) She said the phone was not valid which is wasn't my phone number changed and i failed to update my billing details (where im not ever sure where i can update my details) I then asked her why they didn't send an email to the contact email which i check on an hourly basis. She had no response. They had failed to contact me via email about this matter.

I just got off the phone with someone (it sounded like the same lady) and i wanted some kind of proof of this matter and I she had stated that the email spam that was sent out was about child pornography WHICH I DO NOT DO NOTHING OF THE SORT. This is completely bs. I then asked her if she knew what spoofing was, she paused (i don't think she knew what spoofing was) and then explained to her that this had to be the case as i do not spam no sort of emails as I dont do business that way and defintately not adult/child port related emails.

They tell me that i cannot get my data back to which i have 6 customers 1 of which is an ecommerce website which the client had spent 2 months populating his products into this. HE is very upset with me and I really don't know what to tell him.

I have yet to se proof of this matter and the email that was sent out so I can assure them that this did not come from me or any of my clients ( if any client of mine broke any TOS/AUP I would terminate just his account no problem. BUt the fact that they terminated my reseller account i just dont understand the reasoning behind this..

I am in the middle of getting a lawyer to settle this matter and by all means I do not think they should be in the hosting business (the whole 2 people running it)

So i warm anyone deciding to be a reseller or even host with SurfSpeedy.com DO NOT

And i imagine they wil get on there and try to make me look like the bad guy.. even thogh they don't seem to repond to any tickets or calls.
