I was with Alterhosting for many years because of the amount of domains I could have for one price. But, then the competition came up to speed on pricing. One thing about Alterhosting is their customer support is the worst! They claim to have LIVE CHAT: what a joke! They are never there and they don't ever answer their phones. They used to have a message machine and then they wo9uld call back several days later. Now their website has e-mail support only. I've been waiting all day for an email response and a resolution. They also go down frequently and they will batch send your email, so you have to wait sometimes up to two hours to receive someone's email. AND, they allowed my domain to expire without notifying me! Now I have no domain and no email and nobody to respond. They have really gone down the tubes. Too bad Alterhosting. Try HostGator - much better.

Why are these guys not on the dropdown list? In terms of price/performance I think they must have most other hosting providers beat. I built the California Trade Network using Alterhosting, and have been VERY happy with their services. They are fantastic at supporting open source applications, with a nice collection of them pre-installed. Support is mostly by email, but they seem to go the extra mile to help. Once, when I couldn't publish using both Frontpage and WordPress, and no one anywhere knew how to fix this, they did some extra research and got it to work. The control panel is through Plesk which seems to work well and has most of the features I need for PHP/mySql projects. They have had a few brief outages, but they seem to be less frequent lately and I am happy to recommend these guys.
